Agrium Inc. is a major producer and supplier of agricultural services and products in South and North America, specializing in specialty fertilizers and agricultural nutrients. The company was established in 1931 and named Cominco Fertilizers. In 1954, Sherritt Gordon Fertilizers entered the business with fertilizers and in 1983, the plant in Fort Saskatchewan opened doors. Cominco Fertilizers began to trade shares on the Toronto Stock Exchange as a separate company in 1993 and acquired Crop Production Services on the next year. Cominco Fertilizers changed its name to Agrium Inc in 1995.

Under the brand names Agroservicios Pampeanos S.A., Crop Production Services, and Western Farm Service, the company operates agricultural locations in the United States and South America. The wholesale business of the company provides phosphate-based fertilizers, sulphur, and nitrogen-based fertilizers. To this, the company operates the production facility and potash mine at Vanscoy No. 345, as well as phosphate mining sites in Conda, Idaho and Kapuskasing, Ontario.

Agrium Advanced Technologies is another sector of the company’s activities, focusing on controlled release eco-friendly fertilizer technologies. Agricultural technologies aim to provide returns to growers by optimizing nutrient efficiency, protecting water and the air, and reducing nitrogen loss. Turf and ornamental technologies are intended to offer performance, economic, and environmental advantages through the use of plant protection products, micronutrient products, and controlled release fertilizers.

The company specializes in products for the agricultural, horticulture, turf, professional, and consumer markets, as well as in micronutrients. Agrium also supplies specialty products intended for the agricultural sector. Products are marketed through a distribution network in the United States and Canada. The company takes pride in distributing plant and seed protection products and high-performance sound fertilizers for ornamental growers and turf managers.

The company was recognized by Mediacorp Canada Inc. as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers in 2009 and as one of Alberta's Top Employers. The main competitors of Agrium Inc are Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A., Koch Industries, Inc., and CF Industries Holdings, Inc. Agrium is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and NYSE under the symbol AGU.
